Anxiety sucks. And unfortunately, most of us have to deal with it at some point or another in our lives. Anxiety is tricky too, because we are all so different. It presents in different ways, is helped in different ways, and is caused by different things for each person. Sometimes anxiety can be really overwhelming. Today I was not having a very good day. It got be thinking though. So, I wanted to share with you some of the ways I cope with anxiety when it just gets to be overwhelming.
Care For Yourself Physically
It is so true that how you look and feel outwardly will have large impact on how you feel mentally too. Often I find that if I am feeling really anxious and stressed in the morning, I will feel much better after taking just a few minutes to clean up.
Sometimes caring for myself physically looks different than others. There are many ways you can do this.
When you don’t have the motivation to do much more than the absolute necessary, sometimes just doing the basics can help.
- Drink Water
- Eat something healthy that will give you energy and protein that you need.
- Brush your teeth, hair, and wash your face.
- Change into clean clothes that you love.
Other times I have has a stress and anxiety filled week and I want to take a day or a good chunk of time to just chill, unwind, and let my mind be a little more at peace.
- Draw a warm bath and take some time to soak and relax.
- Get all pretty for yourself. Paint your nails, dress in your favorite outfit, and do your makeup.
- Make your absolute favorite meal or dessert (or both) and enjoy it while watching a lighthearted movie/show.
Care For Your Space
Another major thing that helps me to cope with anxiety is keeping my spaces clean and organized. This is especially true for my bedroom.
If I am struggling with anxiety and my room is a mess I can’t sleep. There have been many nights that I clean and tidy my room before going to bed because it helps me so much to not be anxious. I know that if I don’t I will be tossing and turning all night.
But, in all honesty I feel much better when I keep things clean and organized consistently. Something about it helps my brain to calm down.
Plan and Organize Your Days
When I am struggling with anxiety everything in my mind–all my thoughts–feel super cluttered and messy. Plans, work, and social gatherings can all begin to seem overwhelming when it is all so jumbled like that.
This is one of the biggest reasons I love to have a planner to organize my thoughts. Having everything written down, and being able to visualize it all, helps me to keep from being overwhelmed.
Journal Your Thoughts
When I am dealing with stress and trying to cope with anxiety I always find it helpful to get my thoughts out. Like I said earlier, a lot of times my thoughts can feel like a jumbled mess that I need to get out.
The way I like to do this is my writing my thoughts down. I don’t necessarily have a diary or journal specifically for this honestly. Sometimes I just type out what I am thinking on my phone, or write it in a random notebook. The truth is I never look back at these notes I write, but the fact that I am amble to get out and express what I am feeling helps immensely.
Do Things You Love
When you can’t seem to get control of your thoughts and anxiety is getting overwhelming a something that can help is doing things that you love to do.
The great thing about this is it doesn’t matter what it is, because it is all about you and what you love. Maybe that is watching Netflix, baking, or taking a drive. It doesn’t matter as long as it helps you.
For me, I like to bake and watch a lighthearted show. I also really love to write and listen to music I love, or just sit outside and take it all in.
Remember You’re Not Alone
Seriously, everyone has to struggle with anxiety to varying degrees. You aren’t alone in your struggles, and there are things that can help. It gets better, and truth be told sometimes it gets worse, but it gets better again I promise.
