Hey there lovely! In today’s post I wanted to talk about building a productive morning routine that will help you to start every day off on the right foot. I will go over my own morning routine, but one size does not fit all. So, I will also talk about how you can build your personal morning routine to help you be successful and productive. You will also find a free printable morning routine builder to help you plan out your best morning.
The Importance of a Morning Routine
First lets talk about why morning routines matter. Is it important to have a morning routine? The answer is yes. But why? I suggest reading this article which explains three main reasons morning routines are so vital.
However one of the biggest reasons morning routines are important is because it sets the tone for the day. If you are lazy in the morning your mind and body are naturally going to want to be lazy throughout the entire day.
Loose an hour in the morning and you will spend all day searching for it.
In the same way, if you get up early in the morning and follow your productive routine, you are going to be preparing yourself for a productive day of activity.
The struggle
Many people are well aware of the importance of a solid morning routine, and yet they don’t have one. I am certainly guilty of that at times. Let’s be honest, sticking to any routine is difficult at first. It is especially hard when we are trying to fit a great morning routine into a bad day routine.
What do I mean by that? Well think about it. If your goal is to wake up and start your morning routine at 6am, but you don’t go to bed until midnight or 1 in the morning, you aren’t setting yourself up for success. To me, a morning routine should be a section of your entire day routine, and it should coincide with the other parts of your daily routine.
The Reality
Strive for progress not perfection.
There will be days (especially in the beginning) when you sleep in to late or you are in a rush and can’t do all of your morning routine. Consistency is key, but this is real life and things happen. It is important to remember that some is better than none and you are striving for progress NOT perfection.
My Productive Morning Routine
Like I said before, a morning routine that works amazingly for one person may not work for others. That is why it is important to create your own routine and find out what helps you to be your best self throughout the day. That being said, you can certainly learn from others and try new things to see what works for you. Here is my productive morning routine.
Wake up early–7am.
One of my monthly goals for October is actually going to be attempting to wake up much earlier than 7am, but instead waking up at 5am. However at this point in time I always try to wake up at 7am. It is important to wake up at the same time every day because your body will get use to this and help you to be more awake at that specific time you wake up every single day.
Drink Water
I get super super thirsty at night so I keep a bottle of water by my bed. When I wake up in the morning one of the first things I do is drink some water because one, I am very thirsty. And two, you can’t go wrong by starting off your day hydrating and refreshing yourself with water.
Make my bed
This is a very important step in my morning routine. The first thing I try to do is get out of bed and make it (after a few minutes of cuddling with my kitten Cleo of course.) There are several reasons for this:
- It helps me keep my room put together, neat, and organized which helps me be more productive.
- It forces me to stay out of bed.
- If this is the first thing I do than it gets me out of bed and keeps me from lounging around in my bed checking social media and looking at my phone. Tis eats up so much time and it really isn’t what I want to be filling my mind with first thing in the morning.
Bible Reading
The next thing I do is my daily bible reading. I like to take at least 20-30 minutes in the morning for this. I find mornings are the best time because my head is clear and it’s usually quiet in my house.
Breakfast and Coffee/Tea
Notice how I didn’t say healthy breakfast? Yeah…I don’t have that part of my morning routine down yet. It is another goal of mine to have a healthy breakfast every morning–one that I need to work lots on.
But, in the mornings I will spend a little time eating breakfast and drinking coffee or tea with my family.
Freshen Up
Whether I am going somewhere that day or not I like to spend a little time getting ready for the day. I will wash my face and do my skincare routine, brush my teeth, and do my hair. Depending on the day I will also do my make up. Then I get dressed and I am ready for the days activities.
Listen to Music and Write the Day’s To Do List
The next thing that I do is look at my planner and think about the things I want to accomplish that day. Then I prioritize them and write them on a to do list in my planner. I also really love to listen to upbeat music in the mornings because it is just a good way to start the day and makes me happy.
Building Your Own Productive Morning Routine
I think it is important to ask yourself a few questions when you are building a morning routine for yourself.
What is your biggest struggle in the mornings?
Answering this question will help you to narrow in on the areas of your morning routine that you need to improve on. (For me it’s letting my phone distract me so I take steps to avoid that.)
How much time do you have in the mornings and how much do you want to accomplish?
This will help you to decide the time frame of your morning routine, such as how early you w to get up and how much time you wan to take for different tasks in the morning.
What are three main things you want to accomplish in the morning?
Identifying your 3-4 main goals in your morning routine will help you to put a routine that works well for you together. It will help your routine actually increase your productivity.
For example, my main three goals in my morning routine are; 1) Get myself ready for the day. 2) Take some time to focus on spiritual things. 3) Gather my thoughts, and make a plan for the day.
